Please note that the Bisley grip frames on all three of these revolvers have the same dimensions and contours, although the main frame is different on each. The Bisley Hunter comes with scope base mounting recesses machined into the rib of its 71⁄2” barrel. The stainless option was highly polished to simulate the nickel finish of popular frontier models. It also was made in either blued steel or stainless. It came in two barrel length options, 45⁄8” and 51⁄2” and three calibers-.357 Mag. Therefore, we saw the 1998 introduction of the Bisley Vaquero. It achieved instant popularity, but some shooters wanted the extremely shootable Bisley grip option. SASS shooters wanted revolvers as much as possible like the ones used on the Frontier, so Ruger obliged with a fixed sight variant called the Vaquero. Vaqueros came about as a result of the exploding popularity of the Cowboy Action shooting games. This was essentially a Blackhawk, which differed only in that it had fixed sights. But in 1998 Ruger brought out a Bisley-grip variant of its Vaquero Model. Until just a few years ago, the original Ruger Bisleys with adjustable sights were the only available options. When Bill Ruger and his engineers designed the Bisley, the shape of the butt, hammer and trigger were different than both the Colt Single Action Army and Ruger’s other single-action revolvers. The effect of this shape was to move the shooter’s hand closer to the axis of the bore and thereby aid in recovery from recoil. Here, the curve of the revolver frontstrap is very high and arched. Another feature of the Colt Bisley was much more visually striking-the butt shape. The hammer spur was low and wide, making the gun easier to cock. It was a variation of the eternally popular Single Action Army, with contour changes contrived to make the gun easier to shoot. Colt Firearms, the giant of the handgun industry around the turn of the century, took note of this fact and developed a Bisley Model. International shooting always placed a heavy premium on pure accuracy, and it happened that the term “Bisley” became synonymous with superb performance. In the early days of the 20th century, the great handgun marksmen of the world gathered there to fire a variety of matches. 22 LR is one of the guns the author focused on.īisley is the location of a shooting range in Great Britain. The Ruger Bisley revolver is offered in a host of chamberings and configurations, but all have the distinctive Bisley grip frame and hammer shape.
